There was no crazy drama on Sunday compared to Saturday, but Germany and Portugal deservedly are going to the quarterfinals.
Before the day their was a chance for all four teams in the “Group of Death” to finish in the top two. Even pointless Netherlands could’ve made it with a victory by at least two goals and a Denmark loss.
The day started off well for the Dutch. Rafael Van der Vaart scored a spectacular goal from outside the box in the 11th minute. Germany drew first blood against Denmark through a powerful strike from Lukas Podolski.
However, both Portugal and Denmark responded. Michael Krohn-Dehli headed a goal from a corner kick and Cristiano Ronaldo scored on a great through ball and well-timed run. Both games stood at 1-1 at halftime.
Netherlands threw everything they had at Portugal in the second half, but the Portuguese had the better opportunities by counter attacking. Finally, Cristiano Ronaldo scored his second of the game after a series of great passing. Germany controlled the second half against Denmark, but didn’t show the urgency needed for the second goal until right back Lars Bender pushed up and scored with 10 minutes remaining.
Portugal plays Group A winner Czech Republic in Warsaw on Thursday. Germany meet Greece in Gdansk on Friday.
